is the story of Jennifer Baunoch, whose career has been shaped by a passion for music, a deep understanding of flute mechanics, and decades of leadership in the musical instrument industry.
Whether she’s helping a student with an uncooperative key or assisting a professional in diagnosing elusive mechanical concerns, Jennifer’s mission remains the same: restoring the instrument that brings your art to life.
With deep roots at respected companies including Gemeinhardt, Conn-Selmer (Armstrong, Emerson, and Artley), and the Wm. S. Haynes Company, Jennifer has worked across nearly every facet of the flute world—from expert play-testing and hands-on repair to product innovation, executive leadership, and business strategy.
Through The Flute Refinery, Jennifer brings together technical precision and a heartfelt dedication to helping musicians better understand and care for their instruments. She offers Virtual Refinement Sessions, the Essential Care Kit, and educational resources designed to help flutists build confidence, deepen their understanding, and keep their instruments performing at their best.

Early Inspiration
I grew up in a musical family and knew from an early age that I wanted to play the flute. The summer I received my first flute, around age nine, I spent nearly every day teaching myself to play. I dreamed of being like Sir James Galway, filling rooms with music and magic.
Not long afterward, a kind man from my church—an executive at United Musical Instruments, where Armstrong flutes were made—took notice. He gave me my first open-hole step-up flute and said,
“It’s important to support young musicians. Maybe one day you’ll make a difference in this industry.”
Those words stayed with me, and they quietly shaped the path that followed.
Formative Years & Performance Dreams
In high school, I fully embraced music, performing in concert band and orchestra while proudly serving as drum major of the marching band. One of my proudest moments came when our orchestra won the state’s premier orchestra competition, earning an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall. As a junior, I performed on that iconic stage as part of a flute and violin trio accompanied by the full orchestra—a memory I’ll never forget.
Inspired by those experiences, I went on to study flute performance at DePaul University on scholarship, where I built a strong foundation in technique, interpretation, and artistry.
A New Path: From Performance to Precision
After returning home to Elkhart, Indiana, to begin raising a family, my former high school band director contacted me about a job opportunity at United Musical Instruments. They were looking for a flute tester—a role I didn’t even know existed.
I was hired and began training in quality control, learning to evaluate flutes and piccolos from both a musical and mechanical perspective. I quickly discovered how even the smallest adjustments could dramatically influence an instrument’s response, feel, and performance. As my training continued, I learned to make those subtle refinements myself, ensuring every instrument left the factory performing at its highest potential.
That unique combination of artistry and precision became the foundation of everything I do today.
Industry Impact & Career Growth
From there, my journey led to Gemeinhardt in the 1990s, where I expanded my expertise in assembly, repair, and the fine adjustments that influence an instrument’s response and resonance. Over time, my responsibilities grew to include team leadership, marketing, sales, and research and development.
In the early 2000s, I was invited to join the Wm. S. Haynes Company to help develop the first Amadeus flute—a project I remain incredibly proud to have been part of alongside a talented group of makers and musicians.
Throughout my career, I remained active in the National Flute Association, built lasting relationships with flutists around the world, and balanced professional growth with raising my family. During quieter seasons, I stayed home with my four daughters while restoring vintage flutes.
It was during that time that the vision for The Flute Refinery first began to take shape. The name, the mission, and the philosophy of intertwining the mastery of music, musician, and machine were all born from the belief that every instrument has the potential to perform at its very best when artistry and precision work together.
Innovation & Leadership
In 2007, I returned to Gemeinhardt with a focus on research and development, where I helped refine flute and piccolo scale designs and contributed to launching a new generation of instruments.
One of the projects I’m especially proud of was the development of the Storm Piccolo—a name I created for an instrument designed with input from members of the U.S. Army Band. The first major order was forty Storm Piccolos for the University of Michigan.
By 2010, I had advanced into executive leadership as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, helping shape product strategy, manufacturing, operations, marketing, and future innovation while continuing to advocate for the needs of musicians.
Dreams Realized
One of the greatest honors of my career—and the realization of a childhood dream—was collaborating with Sir James and Lady Jeanne Galway, artists I had admired since I was a young flutist.
Together, we created a high-quality flute line designed especially for students and advancing players. Although developed with accessibility in mind, the exceptional artisanship—particularly in the headjoint—also earned the respect of professional flutists. Sir James even chose to perform on the Galway Crusader headjoint during a Kennedy Center performance, a moment that beautifully reflected the quality we had worked so hard to achieve.
What began as admiration grew into a true partnership rooted in shared passion and purpose. Through countless conversations and a deep understanding of their artistic vision, I proposed the name Galway Crusader, a brand that came to symbolize inspiration, quality, and opportunity within the Galway–Gemeinhardt collaboration.
A New Chapter:
The Flute Refinery
Now, in this next chapter of life, I’m grateful to return to what I enjoy most—working directly with musicians.
Through The Flute Refinery, I offer Virtual Refinement Sessions, the Essential Care Kit, and educational resources designed to help flutists—and those who support them—better understand, care for, and enjoy their instruments with greater confidence.
Beyond the Bench
Beyond the bench, I’m the proud mother of four incredible daughters and GiGi to nine amazing grandchildren—my G-babies. I also share my home with three loyal collies and my beautiful white Maine Coon, Cécile Louise Stéphanie Chaminade, whose name pays tribute to one of my favorite composers.
They remind me every day that life’s greatest joys are found in the relationships we nurture—both in music and beyond.
